Fort Screven, on the island’s north end, was established in 1897 and remained an integral part of the U.S. coastal defense system through the mid-1940’s. The Restored Tybee Lighthouse towers behind the former gun batteries of the fort. The crown, destroyed by Confederate troops at nearby Fort Pulaski to impede the Union Army, was rebuilt following the Civil War and was first lit in 1867. The foundation dates to 1773.
