Visitors at Tybee Island Inn can enjoy Civil War History at Fort Pulaski as all of America celebrates the 150th Anniversary of the Civil War. Confederate General Robert E Lee graduated as an Engineer at West Point and was Fort Pulaski's architect. he vowed that no cannon would ever breach the walls of the fort. Afterall, he designed the structure with 21 Million brick and the east walls of the fort were reinforced with crossties to give it more stability. In April, 1862, the Union Army captured Tybee Island without a fight and immediately blockaded Fort Pulaski. Under the cover of darkness, the Union Army wheeled their massive Rifled Cannons into place along Highway 82, coming into Tybee. (Battery Pointe) Incidentally, it took 250 men to handle one rifled cannon as the guns were massive. Following 30 hours of bombardment, the confederates surrendered.
